Featured Artist
Interview with Alberto Gordillo
Featured Artist for January 2002

Would you introduce yourself and give a little personal background?

I was born in Madrid in 1973. Since I was a child I showed a love for drawing, unfortunately for my parents, because I used as improvised canvas the tables, doors, wardrobes and walls. After watching Star Wars, which really impressed me, my love for fantasy and science fiction grow till now.

How long have you been an artist? How long have you been creating fantasy art?

I've been working in this area since 1992, making illustrations, animations and concept art for several projects, from movies to TV, and finally finishing in the video game industry, where I currently work.

Have you had any formal training in the fine arts?

I studied animation at a school in Madrid. In reference to illustration, my only teacher has been continuous work and the eagerness to learn. I can say I'm self-taught.

What are your biggest artistic influences and inspirations?

My higher inspiration comes from movies and books, although I'm amazed with many artists, I'm not influenced directly from a specific style.

Can you describe your creative process - how you come up with ideas for a new drawing and how you take those ideas and create a finished piece of art.

There isn't a specific way to develop any drawing, but in general, all begin with a mental image and the need of [narration]. It would be like taking frames from a movie and depicting them as you wanted in the beginning of the idea. Sometimes the starting point is a fast sketch that evolves into a more solid thing.

Do you have a favorite fantasy artist or an artist you admire?

Let's see... more than one and less than one hundred.

What advice would you give to young artists who are just starting out?

They must learn and observe constantly, you never know enough...

If you could be a character from a fantasy novel, movie or game, who would you be?

Shrek / Bilbo Bolson mixed ... I think.

Finally, what cartoons did you watch as a kid?

The Flintstones, Atomic Ant, The Smurfs, Mighty Mouse, Ulysses 31, der Biene Maya... a lot of them.
